WHAT IT DOESNT COME WITH
BATTERY. I keep my VERY expensive LiFePo battery (see Mods for background)
COOLER. Original Dometic 45 L died, replaced under warranty by Dometic, died again. Nothing to do with the trailer. I bought a different model that Im keeping.
Youll see the trailer with these items installed so you know it all works. And I can give you suggestions based on your plans.
MODS: I MADE IMPROVEMENTS!
Im a project guy and I put a LOT of thought into this trailer.
CONVERTED TO LITHIUM BATTERY. It came with a basic lead-acid battery: great for cars, but not in the same space as the electrics/cooler. I selected for lithium on the trailers Power Dynamics power controller, sealed/repurposed the vents, replaced the flimsy battery box with a heavy duty mount (group 27 size).
ZAMP 40-AMP SOLAR CONTROLLER. Run any panels you want: now they dont need a built in controller. Shows battery voltage/amps/temp and solar charging status. Panels with 180 rated watts give me 4-6 amps continuous in sunny weather. With a decent battery, cooler and everything else runs indefinitely.
SOFTSTART CAPACITOR for air conditioner. Used to peak at 36 amps (!) on compressor start up. SoftStart brings the A/C on in stages, maxing at 12 amps before running at around 8. Dometic should just build them this way.
HIGH FLOW FAN in inside wall to ventilate battery/slide-out tunnel. Hot and dusty on the trail? Run the Maxxair to pull in clean air from above trailer, then this fan vents the tunnel and helps keep dust out. Includes fuse and low voltage cut off.
POWER TANK 5 LB PROPANE MOUNT. Came with a GIGANTIC 20 lb BBQ mount: WAY too much, WAY too heavy, kind of cheapo. This is better, comes with full 5 LB tank, runs cook top for days.
SKID PROTECTOR for exposed trailer brake box under frame. Fabbed from aluminum square tube even though trailer never bottoms out anyway.
ARMOR ON FENDERS. Take any trailer off road and parts get sandblasted. Fabbed/painted aluminum diamond plate, riveted to fenders for protection.
D RINGS in trailer floor, frame bolted and sealed. Trailer came with no tie downs. These will hold anything.
CUTTING BOARD for cook top hole. Didnt use cook top much and would put this in its place. Dont worry: cook top is back on (easy on/off), works great. You still get the cutting board.
CARPETED ATTIC. Space over the front end was bare laminate, things just slid around. Bought carpet from InTech. Bonus: you get some extra carpet.
BLACK OUT CURTAINS and reflectix window covers for your sleep cave.
CONDITION
Its a camper and weve been camping, but its pretty d@mn close to factory pristine. No accidents, collisions. Everything works, no leaks ever anywhere. Heres everything I can think of:
BODY/FRAME: aluminum frame skinned with plywood/insulation/aluminum sheet. All in excellent shape. Doors/seals/joints/windows/slide out also excellent, no issues.
PAINT. Aluminum body, no corrosion. In fact, roof comes from InTech unpainted. Painted sides have had branch scrapes/sandblasting, always touched up. Took an annoying silver Flyer logo off front end (flashed in rear view mirror) and redid the paint, matched by Martin Auto Color. See pics. Will last years. I have all info about my process.
DEXTER TORSION AXLE ASSEMBLY (INCLUDES HUBS/BRAKES). We NEVER operated the trailer out of spec. But I guess there was a manufacturing defect in the original axle because I noticed negative wheel camber last year. Nothing tricky going on. Most people wouldnt have even seen it. But Dexter stepped up and replaced the whole assembly for free with a brand new unit! Now trailer basically only has about 150 road miles. Should never be an issue again.
ELECTRIC BRAKES. Part of axle/hub combo, so also BRAND NEW. Readjust after a few 100 miles (when brakes bed in), then good for 1000s. Any mechanic/RV shop can do it. A controller is needed and vehicles wired for 7-pin usually have a plug for this under the dash. Can you go without trailer brakes? Sure, not that heavy. But why?
WHEELS/TIRES/SPARE. Apex Rainier ST2325/75R15 steel belted with alloy wheels. Max load of 2420 LBs each and the max GVWR of entire trailer is only 2200 LBs. Theres almost no wear on these beasts. Super tough, never had a flat or any issue, always stored out of the sun.
ELECTRICAL. Perfect, no issues. When driving, 7-pin powers lights, brakes, battery charging, cooler. In camp, battery/solar runs all that. For AC (120V) outlets and air conditioner, hook up to shore power.
